COVID-19 Vaccination

COVID-19 vaccination information

COVID-19 is a very infectious respiratory disease caused by a virus. It is more serious in older people and those with certain health conditions. People at greater risk who catch COVID-19 are more likely to need hospital treatment.

The Winter COVID-19 Vaccination Programme will begin in Powys on 1st October 2025 and run until 31st January 2026.

All eligible people will be invited by letter to receive their COVID-19  Vaccination at their nearest community vaccination clinic.

If you wish to reschedule or cancel your appointment or would like to attend your appointment with a family member or a friend, please call our booking team on 01874 442510. We welcome calls/contact in Welsh.

Who is eligible?

The winter dose will be offered to groups of people who are at greater risk if they get COVID-19. These are:

• people aged 75 and older;

• residents in care homes for older people; and

• anyone aged six months and over who has a weakened immune system

If you are eligible for a winter dose it will be offered between October and January, around six months (and not before three months) after your last dose of vaccine. If you will be turning 75 between October and January, you will be called for your vaccination during the programme – you do not need to wait for your birthday.

Why do some people need a vaccination?

Like some other vaccines, levels of protection may begin to reduce over time. The winter dose will help protect you for longer. It will also help to reduce the risk of you needing to go to hospital due to COVID-19 infection.

Immunosuppressed individuals are more at risk of serious illness from COVID-19. If you have a disorder affecting your immune system, are undergoing immunosuppressive treatment, or are taking medications that increase your risk of infection, you will be invited for your Winter COVID-19 vaccination.

How will I be invited?

The Powys Teaching Health Board Vaccination Service will contact you by letter to let you know when and where to have the vaccine. It’s important to attend the appointment when invited. If you are unable to attend or would like an appointment at the same time as a friend or relative, please let the booking team know so they can give your appointment to someone else.

The booking team can be contacted by phone on 01874 442510 or email   Powys.VaccinationService@wales.nhs.uk

We welcome calls and correspondence in Welsh. We will respond in Welsh without delay.
