Bereavement Support team at PTHB host fundraiser for baby loss awareness week

17 October 2025

Baby Loss Awareness Week (9–15 October) is an annual observance dedicated to remembering babies who have died during pregnancy, at birth, or in infancy, raising awareness of the emotional, physical, and systemic impacts of such losses.

The week offers space and opportunities to speak about a subject that is often seen as sensitive or taboo, helping bereaved families feel less isolated. It also helps to encourage better understanding of grief and highlights the need for compassionate and consistent bereavement care.

On Monday 13 October, the Powys Teaching Health Board Bereavement Lead and Bereavement Champion Midwife, Sophie Parmee, ran a session at Brecon War Memorial Hospital to raise awareness of Baby Loss. The tables featured an array of cakes, a prize every time raffle and angel charm key rings very kindly made by Alison Lobb.

Staff, patients and their respective family members took part in the fundraising efforts. This allowed people to come together to support and share meaningful conversation. Staff and visitors were also able to browse a selection of information booklets, support packs, memory boxes and other valuable resources, with the added bonus of cake, too.

The event was a tremendous success, raising a total of £160 which will added to the Bereavement Fund and used to continue supporting those navigating loss.

The Bereavement Service would like to thank everyone who donated, participated, and contributed to making the morning such a meaningful occasion. A Special thank you to Truffles cake shop in Merthyr for their generous donation of fresh cream cakes for the occasion.

The week culminated in the Wave of Light on 15 October, with people invited to light a candle at 7pm local time in memory of babies lost too soon.
