In Wales, it is against the law to physically punish a child.

Since 21 March 2022, children have had the same legal protection from assault as adults.

Physical punishment can include smacking, hitting, slapping, shaking, or any other use of physical force intended to punish a child.

Supporting children to learn boundaries and appropriate behaviour is an important part of parenting, but there are many positive, non-physical ways to do this. The law does not prevent parents and carers from taking action to keep children safe from harm or carrying out everyday caring responsibilities.
