Sexual abuse/violence refers to any unwanted sexual act or activity carried out without a person's consent and can include rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, exploitation, coercion, or unwanted sexual contact. Anyone can experience sexual abuse/violence, and it can occur within intimate relationships, family relationships, someone known to the victim or a stranger.
Abuse is never the fault of the victim, and support is available for all individuals affected, regardless of gender.
Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) are specialist services that provide free, confidential support to anyone who has experienced rape, sexual assault, or sexual abuse. SARCs are available to women, men, children, and young people, regardless of when the incident occurred or whether they wish to report it to the police. Services are designed to support individuals in a safe, non-judgemental environment and provide access to specially trained professionals.
SARCs can offer immediate crisis support, medical care, forensic examinations where appropriate, emotional support, practical advice, and referrals to specialist counselling and advocacy services. Individuals can access a SARC whether they choose to involve the police or not, ensuring they receive the support and information needed to make informed decisions about their options.
In Wales, SARCs work closely with specialist organisations such as New Pathways, providing ongoing support to adults, children, and young people affected by sexual violence. Their aim is to help survivors feel safe, supported, listened to, and empowered throughout their recovery journey.
Male survivors of sexual violence can also access specialist services such as New Pathways, which supports people of all genders affected by rape, sexual assault, or sexual abuse, regardless of when the abuse occurred or whether it has been reported to the police.
If someone has experienced sexual violence, support is available regardless of their gender, age, background, or whether the assault happened recently or in the past
