Sometimes abusive behaviour can be difficult to recognise, especially if it’s subtle and gradual, it can be difficult to name what’s happening.
You might feel confused, uncertain, or question whether what you are experiencing is “serious enough.” Abuse isn’t always physical and can happen in any relationship.
If something feels wrong, it’s worth paying attention to those feelings.
Abuse is when someone causes harm or distress. It can take many forms, ranging from disrespect to causing someone physical or mental pain. It is often seen in behaviour used to control, frighten, harm, or isolate another person.
It can happen between partners, ex-partners, family members, or people close to you. Abuse may happen occasionally or regularly, and it can become more serious over time.
The following descriptions break down the types of abuse and possible signs, they may occur alongside each other, e.g. financial, sexual abuse and emotional abuse or in isolation. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and able to make their own choices.
