Access to Antivirals when Influenza is Circulating in the Community

PHW surveillance data indicates that influenza is circulating within the community. Prescribers working in primary care may now prescribe, and community pharmacists may now supply, antiviral medications (oseltamivir and zanamivir) for the prophylaxis and treatment of influenza for people in at-risk groups.

The Medicines Management Team has put steps in place to improve access to the antiviral medicine oseltamivir, which should be prescribed for patients in clinical at-risk groups (see attached document) as well as anyone at risk of severe illness and/or complications from influenza if not treated.
