Powys Teaching Health Board is delighted to announce the appointments of Rhiannon Beaumont-Wood to the role of Vice Chair and Mick Giannasi as Independent Member of Powys Teaching Health Board
The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Miles, has confirmed the appointment of Rhiannon Beaumont-Wood as Vice Chair, and Mick Giannasi as Independent Member of Powys Teaching Health Board.
Rhiannon is currently a Non-Executive Director of Welsh Ambulance Service University NHS Trust and NHS Dorset Integrated Care Board, and is the Registrant Council member for Wales within the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
She is a registered nurse with 40 years’ experience starting her career in London in 1981, going on to work in various roles in acute, primary care, community, safeguarding, prehospital care, and public health settings, culminating in a ten-year period as the Executive Director for Quality, Nursing and Allied Health Professionals in Public Health Wales.
Following retirement from her executive role in 2023, Rhiannon has focused on a portfolio career, including her non-executive positions and her national role on the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Rhiannon has previously been a Trustee for two charities, one supporting victims and survivors of Domestic Abuse, and the other supporting professional leadership.
She is also a trained integrative counsellor and Meyler Campbell trained professional and senior leadership coach.
Rhiannon said:
“I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed as Vice Chair of Powys Teaching Health Board. I am very much looking forward to working with the Board, the wider organisation, and our partners, to contribute to improving health outcomes and enhance the quality of life for the people of Powys.
“I recognise that the Health Board faces challenges, like all others in Wales, but I firmly believe that by continuing to work in partnership with those who live and work in Powys, we can make positive and meaningful progress.
“I have personal family ties to Powys stretching back over several generations, and I greatly value both all that the county has to offer and the resourcefulness of its people.”
Mick Giannasi also brings significant experience across public sector leadership and transformation. He retired from the police service in 2011, after a distinguished career spanning 31 years, and was awarded the Queen's Police Medal for his contribution to policing in 2011. Following his retirement from the Police Service, Mick was appointed by Welsh Government to act as a Commissioner for the Isle of Anglesey County Council, and was then appointed as Chair of the Board of the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust from 2013 to 2018. He is currently chair of Social Care Wales, and first joined Powys Teaching Health Board as an Independent Member in February 2024 as a directly appointed Independent Member.
Mick said:
“I am delighted to be appointed as an Independent Member of Powys Teaching Health Board. In previous roles, I’ve developed a strong affinity for Powys and a good understanding of what is needed to deliver high quality healthcare in a rural county. I was drawn to this role by the Board’s genuine ambition to improve health outcomes, its strong focus on the needs of Powys communities, and the genuine value it places on its workforce. I’m looking forward to working with colleagues, partners and staff to play my part in achieving those ambitions.”
Dr Carl Cooper, Chair of the Board said:
“I'm delighted that Rhiannon has been appointed to the role of Vice-Chair and Mick as an Independent Member of Powys Teaching Health Board. We are at an important juncture in our transformation journey as we continue to establish plans for the future of high quality, safe, timely and sustainable health services in Powys. Rhiannon and Mick’s distinguished careers together with their wider skills, experience and knowledge will further strengthen and enrich the governance of our organisation.
“I look forward to working with them both as we continue to develop visible, compassionate and collaborative leadership within the Board and alongside all our colleagues and partners.”
The Board exists to oversee the system of governance and control, including risk management. This means that the board make decisions on how things run and how to keep staff and patients safe. They do so by meeting in public as a Board, as well as in committees focused on different areas of the health board’s activities, such as quality, finance, performance, workforce, planning and population health.
The Minister has appointed Rhiannon Beaumont-Wood to Powys Teaching Health Board for a period of four years from February 2026, and Mick Giannasi for a period of four years from 1 October 2025. The appointments have been made in accordance with the Governance Code on public appointments.
