The season of cosy layers and festive get-togethers is here, but so is the season of illnesses and viruses like colds, flu, norovirus, RSV and COVID-19 that can spread easily and spoil plans.
The good news? Just a few small daily habits can go a long way towards helping to keep you and your loved ones safe.
Here are five easy ways in which you can beat winter viruses:
1. Wash your hands regularly for 15-20 seconds with soap and water. 4 in 5 illnesses like colds and flu can be spread by hands. Washing our hands regularly is one of the best ways we can protect ourselves against illnesses like colds and flu
2. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough and sneeze, bin the tissue, and wash your hands
3. Let fresh air in when you can. Even opening windows for a short time can help remove stale air that contains virus particles and prevent the spread of illnesses
4. Tempting as it is to head out, consider staying at home if you’re feeling unwell – to give yourself time to recover and to prevent passing on germs
5. If you’re eligible make sure you attend your flu vaccination appointment to help protect yourself from serious illness. You might also be eligible for other vaccines like COVID-19 and RSV.
In cold weather, remember to look after your health and wellbeing by layering your clothes, keeping your home warm, and keeping in touch with loved ones.
Small actions can make a big difference.
