April is Stress Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, #LeadWithLove, reminds us of the incredible power of kindness and its proven positive effects on our mental health.
Sometimes it really is the little things that count. Research shows that small acts of compassion – both to ourselves and others – can significantly boost our mental wellbeing by releasing feel-good hormones, reducing stress, and strengthening our sense of community.
Luckily, kindness doesn’t have to be grand or complicated. Here are three ways you can bring more kindness into your daily life:
1. Volunteer your time
Volunteering not only benefits those in need but also provides a sense of fulfilment and combats loneliness. Get in touch with Pavo for volunteering opportunities in Powys, or if you live elsewhere, contact the Wales Council for Voluntary Action to connect with your local voluntary org.
2. Check in on loved ones
That call you’ve been meaning to make for a while but keeping putting off? Do it today. It can mean the world. Taking the time to listen and show you care strengthens relationships and reminds you both that no one is alone.
3. Be kind online
Social media doesn’t have to be a source of stress and conflict – play it right and it can also be a place for positivity. Instead of engaging in negativity, choose to share uplifting messages, support others, and avoid unkind interactions. Your words have the power to brighten someone’s day.
Of course, being kind to yourself is just as important as being kind to others, so show yourself the same compassion you would a friend or loved one. If stress is still a struggle, you can manage it with the help of SilverCloud’s ‘Space for Stress’.
It’s a free, online programme available to anyone in Wales aged 16+. Register today without seeing a GP and work through the course at your own pace on your phone, tablet or computer.
