World Mental Health Day 2024 – it's time to prioritise staff mental health

This year’s World Mental Health Day serves as a critical reminder to employers to support staff  wellbeing – it’s not just a compassionate move; it’s essential for fostering a healthy, productive work environment.

With that in mind, here are five actionable strategies for responsible employers who want to take workplace mental health seriously.

1. Promote a Culture of Work-Life Balance

Encourage employees to take time off when they need it and to fully disconnect during non-work hours. Remember to lead by example – business leaders and management should model this behaviour by taking breaks and vacations themselves, sending employees a clear signal that it’s OK to prioritise personal wellbeing.

2. Provide Access to Mental Health Resources

Offer comprehensive mental health support such as access to counselling services, mental health days, and wellness programs. Make sure employees know what’s available and feel comfortable using it. Communicate the availability of these resources regularly to normalise seeking help.

3. Implement Flexible Working Arrangements

Workplace flexibility can significantly reduce stress and improve mental health. Consider offering flexible working hours or remote work options. Allowing employees to tailor their schedules can help them manage personal responsibilities and reduce burnout.

4. Foster Open Dialogue About Mental Health

Create a safe environment where employees feel comfortable discussing mental health without fear of stigma. Host workshops or training sessions that educate staff on mental health issues and encourage open conversations.

5. Recognise and Reward Efforts

Acknowledge the hard work and achievements of your employees. Regular recognition can boost morale and contribute to a positive work environment. Implement recognition programs, whether through formal awards or simple acknowledgments in team meetings, to show appreciation for your team’s efforts.

Above all, remember that prioritising mental health is not just a trend—it’s a long-term investment in the wellbeing of your workforce.
