Help With Suicidal Thoughts

What to do if you need help immediately

Are you thinking about suicide?

STOP

  • Don’t do anything right now, you do not have to act on your thoughts of suicide.
  • Suicide is final – your thoughts, feelings and problems can change.
  • You may feel overwhelmed and that there’s no way out but when we are struggling to cope, our mind closes down our problem-solving skills.
  • Try to keep yourself safe for now and spend time thinking about what your reasons for living might be.

GET HELP

  • Talk to someone; a friend, family member or support service – see the list below - there are people who want to listen and help.
  • Phone 111 and press 2 to speak directly to a mental health professional.
  • If you feel your life is at risk, phone 999 or go to your nearest A&E.

Are you worried about someone else?

  • If you suspect someone may be thinking about suicide, ask them – it could save their life.
  • Not everyone who thinks about suicide will tell someone but there may be warning signs.
  • Tell the person why you are worried about them and that it is ok to talk about suicide.
  • Listen to what the person says and treat what they say seriously and sensitively.
  • Try not to judge or give advice.
  • Discuss how they can keep safe and where you can find help together.

GET HELP

  • Encourage them to call 111 and press 2 to speak directly to a mental health professional.
  • Encourage them to use one of the supported services below.
  • If you think they are in immediate danger, phone 999 or go together to your nearest A&E.
