Nevill Hall Hospital is Changing on 17 November 2020

Is Nevill Hall Hospital your nearest District General Hospital? Nevill Hall Hospital services are changing in November.

The Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran will open on 17 November 2020. This is earlier than originally planned to help ensure the NHS is ready for the additional challenges of COVID-19 during the winter.

From 17 November 2020, the Grange University Hospital will become the main centre in Gwent for:

  • 24 hour consultant-led emergency care
  • 24-hour consultant-led maternity & neonatal services
  • 24-hour consultant-led paediatric (children’s) services.

From 17 November 2020, consultant-led emergency care (including A&E), consultant-led maternity & neonatal services and consultant-led paediatric services will transfer TO the Grange University Hospital FROM the Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny and FROM the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

These changes aim to ensure that patients receive faster access to life saving care by ensuring that the right team of people with the right skills and experience is available 24 hours a day. This will help to ensure that patients receive prompt care that delivers great outcomes with reduced risk of complications.

The majority of the care that you receive from hospitals in Gwent will remain unchanged. Nevill Hall Hospital will continue to provide a wide range of services including nurse-led minor injury unit, outpatient appointments, diagnostics and planned procedures.

However, from 17 November 2020, if you need more complex care that was previously provided at Nevill Hall Hospital, you may be referred to a different hospital. This includes the following services which will no longer be available at Nevill Hall Hospital.

  • Consultant A&E (Accident and Emergency) services (and all urgent care for children under the age of one)
  • Inpatient surgery requiring overnight stay
  • Consultant-led births
  • Consultant inpatient children’s services
  • Urgent & emergency care for children up to their first birthday
  • Some acute admissions

If Nevill Hall Hospital is currently your nearest DGH then a different hospital will be your nearest DGH in November. For most people their new nearest A&E hospital will be Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. For some parts of Powys you may now be nearer to an alternative hospital such as County Hospital in Hereford.

Some residents in mid west Powys (e.g. Llanwrtyd, Rhayader) who have used Nevill Hall in the past may also in future be closer to Glangwili or Bronglais.
