Following a breast cancer diagnosis, many people consider making changes to their diet to support their health and wellbeing. However, misinformation about diet and cancer is widespread, often leading to confusion, anxiety and unnecessary dietary restriction.
A new video, 'Diet and Breast Cancer: Advice before, during and after treatment' has been developed to address common myths and misconceptions and provides clear, evidence-based information for people affected by breast cancer.
At the heart of the 'conversational-style' video are four women - Emma, Lena, Jenny and Jan - who share their personal experiences of diet and nutrition before, during and after breast cancer treatment.
Healthcare professionals reflect on these conversations throughout the video and provide practical, evidence-based advice, while addressing common myths and misconceptions, and explaining how treatment can affect eating, drinking and nutritional needs.
The video also highlights trusted national sources of information and reinforces the importance of seeking personalised advice from breast care teams and healthcare professionals, such as registered dietitians.
Jan, who features in the video, said:
“I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to share my learning in helping shape this amazing resource following my own experience in navigating my breast cancer journey. I sincerely hope it helps and makes it easier for future patients to find all the information they need to follow a healthy and balanced diet.”
The video was developed in response to a survey conducted in 2025, which identified a strong desire among breast cancer patients for reliable information about what to eat, what to avoid and how diet may impact their treatment, recovery and long-term health.
Jane Spivey, Macmillan Allied Health Professional Cancer Lead in Powys Teaching Health Board, said:
“Being involved in developing and delivering the video was a great experience, co-production was key to shaping the content.
“It was a privilege to learn about people's experiences and dietary challenges and to use these insights to provide relatable, evidence-based dietary advice for those affected by breast cancer before, during, and after treatment.”
The video was produced by an All-Wales multi-disciplinary working group in collaboration with people affected by breast cancer. It has been endorsed by both the British Dietetic Association Oncology Specialist Group and the National Cancer Team (Wales).
It can be watched in full or accessed in individual sections, allowing viewers to easily find the information most relevant to them. The content is divided into three key stages; diagnosis, during treatment, and after treatment.
