Service launched to help children, young people and families access emotional wellbeing support

The multi-agency team behind the development of Powys SPACE.

A new service designed to make it easier for Powys children, young people and families to access emotional wellbeing support has been officially launched.

Powys SPACE (Single Point of Access for Children's Emotional wellbeing) was launched on Thursday (3 September) and provides a single, coordinated route to advice, information, early help and emotional wellbeing support for babies, children and young people aged 0 to 25 and their families.

The service acts as a multi-agency virtual front door, bringing together partners from across education, health, social care and support services to ensure families receive the right support, at the right time, without having to navigate multiple referral pathways.

Through one point of contact, families, young people and professionals can access advice, guidance and support. Following a referral or enquiry, the SPACE team will hold a ‘What Matters’ conversation to better understand individual needs, strengths and circumstances before connecting people to the most appropriate support.

Powys SPACE aims to provide:

  • Early access to advice, information and guidance
  • Faster connections to appropriate services and support
  • A more joined-up experience for families
  • Consistent decision-making through a multi-agency approach
  • Reduced duplication and clearer support pathways for professionals

The service is available through:

Both self-referrals from families and young people, and referrals from professionals, feed into the same coordinated system.

The development of SPACE has been informed by work across Powys which identified the need for a simpler, more joined-up approach to emotional health and wellbeing support. The service builds on the principles of the Nyth/Nest framework and aims to ensure children and young people receive help before issues escalate.

Councillor Sandra Davies, Powys County Council's Cabinet Member for Future Generations, said: "The launch of Powys SPACE is a significant step forward in the way we support the emotional health and wellbeing of children, young people and families across our county.

"We know that navigating services can sometimes be confusing and that families often want help at an earlier stage. SPACE provides a single, easy-to-access route that brings organisations together, reduces duplication and helps people get the right support first time.

"By working in partnership and focusing on early intervention, we can make a real difference to the lives of children and young people, helping them build resilience, improve wellbeing and access support before difficulties become more serious.

"I would like to thank all the partners and staff who have worked hard to develop this innovative service and make it available to families across Powys."

Routes into existing services remain and SPACE does not replace routes into emergency or crisis services, safeguarding procedures or CAMHS referral routes. If you need urgent support, call NHS 111, option 2, or 999 in an emergency.

Powys SPACE has been developed with the help of Welsh Government’s Regional Integration Fund (RIF) investment, supported by the Powys Regional Partnership Board and Start Well Board.
