Statutory Procurement of Out Of Hours General Medical Services

A sign that reads Powys

12 October 2026

Powys Teaching Health Board will shortly begin a procurement process for the provision of GP Out of Hours services in Powys.

This is a routine and statutory process required under Welsh Government procurement legislation, which requires public bodies to undertake open, fair and transparent procurement exercises for services of this nature. The health board’s current contract for these services ends in September 2027, so the procurement process will ensure continuity of these important services.

The procurement will be open to all suitably qualified providers, including the current providers of GP Out of Hours services. The process will focus on securing high-quality, safe and sustainable services that meet the needs of Powys residents. Our priority throughout is to ensure that residents continue to have access to high-quality urgent general medical care when their GP practice is closed.

We would like to reassure patients and communities that whilst this procurement process is under way people should continue to access this service in the usual way by contacting NHS 111 Wales when their GP practice is closed.

As this is a commercial procurement process, there will be limits on the information we are able to share while the process is underway. This is to ensure fairness and compliance with procurement regulations for all organisations taking part. We will provide updates where appropriate and once the procurement process has concluded.

Further information, including the service specification, procurement timetable and tender requirements, will be issued as part of the formal procurement process, and a Supplier Engagement Event will be held via Teams on 20th October 2026.
