Work is progressing to secure a new community pharmacy service in Llanfyllin.

Following consideration of applications by the Pharmaceutical Applications Committee, a recommendation was made to approve an application for a new community pharmacy service. However, the decision is currently subject to an appeal being considered by Welsh Government in accordance with the NHS (Pharmaceutical Services) (Wales) Regulations 2020.

Powys Teaching Health Board has been advised by Welsh Government that all information required to determine the appeal has been received and that the appeal is currently under consideration. Welsh Government has confirmed that the appeal has been prioritised due to the need to restore pharmaceutical services in Llanfyllin.

Until the appeal process has concluded, the Health Board is unable to progress the establishment of a new community pharmacy service in the town.

We recognise the inconvenience this continued delay is causing local residents and would like to thank patients and the team at Llanfyllin Group Practice for their ongoing support. The practice continues to provide dispensing services to its registered patients while arrangements for a permanent community pharmacy are progressed.

We remain committed to securing a sustainable long-term community pharmacy service for Llanfyllin and will provide a further update as soon as the appeal process has concluded and we are able to share more information.

In the meantime, we are grateful to Llanfyllin Group Practice who continue to offer dispensing services for all their patients until the new pharmacy is established.

From January 2026

From January 2026, all Llanfyllin Group Practice patients can collect their NHS prescriptions from the Llanfyllin Group Practice dispensary.

If you need other community pharmacy services such as the Common Ailments Service or Emergency Medicines Supply please visit your nearest alternative community pharmacy. Alternative pharmacies are available in Welshpool, Oswestry and Newtown as well as in other neighbouring communities such as Bala, Glyn Ceiriog and Chirk.

Until a new community pharmacy is in place, please accept our apologies that local dispensing services will not be available on Saturdays in Llanfyllin. Weekend pharmacy services are available in Welshpool, Oswestry, and Newtown.

Health advice when it is urgent but not an emergency is available from NHS 111 Wales by calling 111 free from a landline or mobile phone or by visiting 111.wales.nhs.uk

What will happen once a new community pharmacy opens in Llanfyllin?

Positive progress is being made to put in place a new provider of community pharmacy services in the town. However, please accept our apologies that it will take several weeks to put a new service in place. We will share further updates on progress.

When a new community pharmacy opens, prescriptions will revert to their previous arrangements and anyone living within one mile of the new pharmacy should collect their prescriptions from the community pharmacy.

The Pharmaceutical Applications Process

We took immediate action by issuing a Supplementary Statement to our pharmaceutical needs assessment. This is the required process, in line with the NHS Pharmaceutical Wales Regulations, when a gap in pharmacy provision is identified. This invites applications from pharmaceutical providers to support the continued provision of NHS pharmaceutical services in the Llanfyllin area, and we look forward to a positive conclusion as soon as possible.

There are commercial sensitivities that must be taken into account when undertaking processes of this nature. We apologise that this does limit the information that we are able to share. It is really important that we do not compromise the contracting process as this could lead to delay.
