Lung screening returns to Royal Welsh Show following the success of 2025 initiative

The 2025 Royal Welsh Show saw over 150 individuals access free Spirometry Screening provided by Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB). A spirometry test is a common breathing test which aims to detect various respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD.

Held across all four days of the show, the PTHB stand provided accessible lung health checks using specialist equipment, engaging with a diverse audience including members of the agricultural community. Due to the success of the 2025 initiative, we are delighted to announce that lung screening will once again be offered.

✅ Key Achievements from 2025

  • 154 attendees screened using spirometry
  • 38% (59 participants) were from agricultural professions
  • 29% (45 individuals) showed abnormal spirometry results
  • Among those in agricultural roles, 32% had abnormal results, highlighting the importance of targeted outreach

All participants received immediate feedback, with those showing abnormal results signposted to their GP for further investigation, supporting early diagnosis and intervention.

Making an Impact

Beyond the data, the event created valuable opportunities for meaningful conversations about lung health, occupational risks, and prevention. With over 200,000 people attending the Royal Welsh Show overall, the initiative successfully raised awareness among a wide and relevant audience.

This work is particularly important given the increased risk of lung conditions such as COPD, asthma, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis within agricultural settings. Early detection and education remain key to improving long-term health outcomes.

Looking Ahead

Building on the success of the 2025 event, PTHB remains committed to continuing lung health screening at the Royal Welsh Show.

The stand will return to the first floor of the Defaid (Sheep) Building, opposite Glamorgan Hall, located between the Sheep Ring and the Shearing & Wool Handling areas.

To help address potential accessibility challenges, the team will utilise portable devices and adopt a mobile approach across the showground, enabling engagement with a wider range of attendees who may not be able to access the stand location.

At the 2026 event, participants will be offered:

  • FeNO screening - a safe, quick, and non-invasive way of measuring airway inflammation, making it a valuable tool in diagnosing and managing asthma.
  • Spirometry screening – a non-invasive breathing test that measures the volume and flow of air you can inhale and exhale.

This flexible and enhanced approach aims to maximise reach, improve accessibility, and continue supporting early detection and awareness of lung health across the community.

Together, we are making strides towards earlier diagnosis, better awareness, and healthier communities.
